The third annual NC DataPalooza Demo Day is next Monday at the Red Hat Annex, and it promises to be the biggest finale to date in this event series. 15 teams developed open-data startup concepts since forming at either the May kickoff or DataPalooza’s partner event, CityCamp NC, and three of those teams will compete for a $5,000 cash prize and a $500 bonus from mapping software company ESRI in just a few days.
The three finalists, chosen by a team of judges during a private pitch event in August, include Open511, an app that sends automated road closure data to services like Google Maps and Waze; BernieSez, a platform bringing transparency to the courts by making NC judicial records easy to search, sort, and use; and Points of Note, an app that would provide cultural resource, land trust and historic data to visitors around North Carolina. Points of Note, a father-son team spearheaded by ten-year-old Gavin Clark, was the winning idea at CityCamp in June.
In addition to seed funding, the winning team will walk away with a three-month membership to HQ Raleigh and an interactive marketing and branding strategy session with Brasco ///.
Monday’s event will also highlight open data innovation from entrepreneurial, civic and corporate perspectives through a series of short talks.
Rob Burns, CEO of Raleigh-based open source startup PredictifyMe will open the event, followed by remarks from the new Town of Cary CIO Nicole Raimundo (formerly the COO of IT for the City of Raleigh). Following the company pitches, attendees will hear a keynote address by Red Hat’s Chief Information Officer, Lee Congdon.
Previous competition winners include The Parking App Development Team, which continue to partner with both North Hills and the City of Raleigh to implement their mobile parking solutions, and Stone Soup, an online platform to connect food donors with those in need (a Q&A with those winners can be found here.)
