Raleigh startup Impathiq is creating proprietary software designed to improve clinical decisions through integration of electronic medical record systems. The solution can cut unnecessary testing and, thus, costs.

Led by an MD, Iltifat Husain, the startup already is showing traction among investors.

“According to a recent Institute of Medicine study, our U.S. healthcare system wastes over $200 billion in unnecessary testing for patients. What’s worse, this over-testing and over-spending does not translate to better healthcare outcomes,” Husain says.

“To address this massive problem, Impathiq develops proprietary clinical decision support software applications that integrate into the electronic medical record systems used by hospitals. Through the use of these apps, physicians can make better, more informed decisions for their patients in order to improve patient care while also reducing healthcare costs.”

Cofounders in Cary has already seen enough potential in the company to invest $350,000.

Impathiq also was a recipient of a grant from NC IDEA, adding further to its investor appeal.

Impathiq will be presenting at the CED Tech Venture Conference on Sept. 19-20.

The Q&A:

  • What is the focus of your business?

Impathiq creates intelligently integrated electronic medical record (EMR) clinical decision support solutions that enable physician behavior change and give hospitals the ability to track clinical outcomes at a granular level. By utilizing new SMART FHIR  [an open standards based technology platform that enables innovators to create apps that seamlessly and securely run across the healthcare system] interoperability standards we can deliver these tools in a cost effective manner.

  • What is the top pain point/business application you are seeking to address?

According to a recent Institute of Medicine study, our U.S. healthcare system wastes over $200 billion in unnecessary testing for patients. What’s worse, this over-testing and over-spending does not translate to better healthcare outcomes.

To address this massive problem, Impathiq develops proprietary clinical decision support software applications that integrate into the electronic medical record systems used by hospitals. Through the use of these apps, physicians can make better, more informed decisions for their patients in order to improve patient care while also reducing healthcare costs.

  • What makes it unique?

Impathiq solutions stand apart in three unique ways:

1) They are built by physicians, for physicians. Our clinical decision support apps are evidence based, clinically validated and easy to use by physicians.

2) They are built upon the proprietary IQ Engine. This platform enables seamless integration with leading EMRs at point-of-care, while also delivering a robust backend administrator informatics dashboard for analyzing adherence, compliance, outcomes and other key variables to improve healthcare.

3) Our tools are on the Cerner and EPIC “App Stores”, giving hospitals the ability to download them similar to downloading an app on your iPhone. By utilizing the EMR app stores, we are able to rapidly deploy cost-effective solutions.

  • Why should investors be interested in your firm?

The digital health and healthcare informatics fields are booming. There is no question that healthcare solutions will rely more and more on precision medicine, data analytics, machine learning and other techniques to improve patient outcomes while reducing healthcare cost. Impathiq is at the forefront of clinical decision support in this space, boasting an executive leadership team of MDs and PhDs backed by a proven investor group with experience in digital health.

Further, we have proven our integrated tools actually do save millions of dollars a year in published and peer reviewed medical journals.

Our first app, the HEART Pathway has been validated in a randomized controlled clinical trial and used for over 10,000 patients.

  • How are you financed at this point?

Impathiq received an $18,000 Commercial Pathway Award grant from Wake Forest Innovations in late 2016, followed by a $50,000 grant from NC IDEA in early 2017.

Most recently, Impathiq secured $350,000 in seed stage funding from Cofounders Capital (Cary, NC) in April 2017.
