RALEIGH – The next generation of wow is coming. Are you ready to see it? Hear it? Become immersed in it?

WRAL TV is bringing a consortium of partners to the Capital City on Monday, Feb. 19, to demonstrate emerging technology known as “Next Generation TV,” or Next Gen for short. And the demo – built around NBC’s coverage of the Winter Olympics – is expected to show how WRAL, as well as other broadcasters, plan to deploy what is a great deal more than just a sharper picture.

In November, the FCC voted 3-2 to allow the voluntary roll-out of the ATSC 3.0 advanced transmission standard, and the broadcasting industry as well as hardware and TV providers are gearing up for the next wave in entertainment.

The public can see the demo at The Startup Social, a joint effort from Capitol Broadcasting’s Big Top job platform and WRAL TechWire.

Tickets are now available. There is no charge to attend.

Next Gen TV revolves around a new broadcasting technology called ATSC 3.0, which provides 4K ultra high definition video as well as improved, immersive sound quality and provides for the adding of interactive features to involve viewers in broadcasts.

Also participating in the presentation are the National Association of Broadcasters and NBC Universal, Samsung, LG/Zenith and other vendors also will be showcasing TVs and other gear.

The public Next Gen TV Olympics demonstration is another industry first for WRAL, which was first in the nation to broadcast an ATSC 3.0 simulcast in June 2016 and became the first commercial TV station to embrace high-definition.
