DURHAM – Thomas Wessel, a veteran executive in the semiconductor industry with more than 20 years of experience, is the new senior vice president for global sales and marketing at Cree (Nasdaq: CREE).

Wessel assumed the role as of Monday. He will direct sales and marketing for Cree LED businesses and its Wolfspeed power and radio frequency group.

“Thomas has a history of success in sales, marketing and business leadership within the markets Cree serves,” said Gregg Lowe, CEO of Cree. “Cree’s Wolfspeed power and RF and LED component technologies are critical to the success of today’s most in-demand and evolving markets, such as the automotive industry’s transition to electric vehicles. We are confident Thomas will help us unlock Cree’s potential.”

Lowe was named Cree’s CEO last September.

Wessel most recently worked at NanoSemi, a a venture-backed spinoff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and MIT Lincoln Laborator. He was vice president of sales and marketing.

Earlier jobs included posts at Analog Devices, Texas Instruments and Atlantik Elektronik.

Wessel earned an engineering degree in physics from the University of Applied Sciences Lübeck and completed the advanced management program at IESE Business School.
