CARY – Epic Games is making its increasingly popular game Fortnite available for mobile Apple devices, moving beyond its beta trial.

“No invite needed – Fortnite is now open everywhere on iOS. Grab your friends and jump in now!”

So tweeted Epic on Monday morning about Fortnite which is emerging as one of the most popular games in its genre – .

The game features a post-apocalyptic world with survivors of mankind fighting zombies. It is free. Epic makes money from selling a variety of accessories and related services.

Fortnite has drawn millions of players in simultaneous play – and generated good reviews, such as one published at TechWire.

In a blog post, the team of developers behind Fortnite announced a month ago that the mobile version will support “cross play” across multiple platforms.

“This means players across devices can squad up with friends and play together,” Fortnite’s team wrote.

“We believe this is the future of games. The same game on all platforms. Console quality graphics and action. Play when you want, where you want.”

Crossplay involves PlayStation 4, PC, Mac and iOS.

A boost from Drake

How popular is Fortnite?

Pop superstar Drake helped generated a record stream on Twitch when he logged on to compete. (A replay is available online.)

“[T]he game’s pure fun factor, combined with Epic’s breakneck update cycle, is what’s helped Fortnite remain at the forefront of the online multiplayer scene since its September 2017 launch,” reports The Verge.

“Just last week, Epic added a new and improved snipers-only game mode, a ludicrous homing missile weapon, and a number of in-game clues pointing toward the destruction of the game’s Tilted Towers section, a potential game-changing event for a persistent multiplayer game that now has the whole community talking and swapping theories on online forums.”

Declares Forbes:

“Fortnite is the biggest gaming phenomenon of 2018. It’s a ‘battle royale’ style game where 100 players drop onto a huge map and then fight to the death with the last player standing winning a Victory Royale. The game is colorful and cartoony, reminiscent of Pixar films, and has no blood or gore. Players drop into the map where they find weapons and gear to help them win the match. As the match progresses, it’s constricted by an encroaching storm. If you’re caught out in the storm, you die. This pushes players closer and closer together until a final showdown ensues.”

Fortnite reported more than 45 million players in January with 2 million playing at the same time.

Fortnite can be played on a variety of Apple iOS devices. The game is available for download at the App Store.
