RALEIGH — The number of IT job postings in North Carolina hit a 2018 high in October at 25,697 jobs, up 25 percent from the same period last year, according to the monthly NC Technology Association (NC TECH) Tech Talent Trends Alert (TTTA).

NC outpaced national IT job growth year-over-year at plus 24.9 percent vs. 21.3 percent.
While software development jobs remained a top job category, computer systems engineers positions surged 53 percent since Oct. 2017.
Java developers were in particularly high demand, topping the list of skills certification jobs posted.
Other skills in demand include structured query language, Linux, Python, Javascript, App development, systems development life cycle, and Microsoft.
Microservices show strong growth
Another technology showing strong growth, according to the report, is microservices, which grew 147 percent over last year and has climbed to number three on the TTTA. Microservices is a software development technique used to make applications easier to scale and expand.
A recent survey by Red Hat showed that 69 percent of the respondents are using microservices not only to build new apps, but also to modernize existing ones.
The retail industry surpassed manufacturing as a leading employer gaining 93 percent over the same period last year.
Top ten hirers were Oracle, IBM, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Cisco, Deloitte, Verizon, NTT Data, BB&T Corp., and Lowes.
The all but two top MSAs showed healthy gains over the same period last year, particularly Charlotte/Concord/Gastonia, up 13 percent, Raleigh, up 39.9 percent, and Durham/Chapel Hill up a whopping 99.6 percent, reflecting rapid growth of Durham’s expanding technology hub.
Only Fayetteville, down 5.1 percent and Asheville, down 19.9 percent saw losses in IT hiring over last year’s numbers.
