Launched in 1976, SAS has grown from $138,000 in revenue to more than $3 billion. It has nearly 14,000 employees, more than 5,000 of which are based at a growing campus in Cary.

But there were also some lesser-known companies that made the list, such as Earth Fare (8) and Vidant Health (13). The Wake County Public School System also made an appearance in 25th spot.

In total, 67 companies were ranked in North Carolina featuring a solid mix of higher education, healthcare and technology.

“Forbes partnered with market research company Statista to pinpoint the organizations liked best by employees in our first-ever ranking of America’s best employers by state,” the website says.

A few weeks back, WRAL TechWire did a similar list of sorts, researching 50 regional companies or those with large operations here, and what employees has to say about their bosses and companies.

While both SAS and Cisco make the list, the results differ slightly to the Forbes’ list.
