DURHAM – Local startup Boon is hoping to take advantage of the rising “gig economy.” And now it has the funds to do so.

The Durham-based startup recently raised around $245,000 in equity to scale its new app, which helps connect licensed healthcare professionals to contract gigs.

That included $115,000 raised from more than 90 investors through the crowdfunding service WeFunder, and another $65,000 in private funding from angel investors.

Boon’s founder, Ryan Vet, forked out the remaining $65,000.

“A practice can, with the click of a button, hire a provider. That provider could be to their office in as little as an hour. That transforms the healthcare temporary staffing space,” said the 27-year-old, who grew up surrounded by healthcare. His mother is a nurse, and his wife is dentist and graduate of UNC’s School of Dentistry. He himself is also passionate about dentistry, at least enough to start The Dental Experience podcast, ruminating on best patient practice.

As such, Boon requires all licensed professionals to go through a third-party, background check in addition to license and credential verification. Matches are created via an algorithm that connects providers to practices “based on factors such as technology utilization, past experience and personality traits.

Vet said the funds will go towards growing the platform.

“The Boon platform is complete and is working incredibly well. We now need to scale and grow. The funds will be used to onboard new providers and practices and go to market.”

Boon currently has around eight employees, and is currently interviewing for several leadership roles.

“We plan to continue to ramp the team with heavy hitters as well as look for opportunities to strategically work with other companies and organizations to expand our reach and further propel our growth.
