RALEIGH – North Carolina’s capital city is No. 1 on the “Best Cities for Jobs in the US,” according to a new report from employment and jobs website Glassdoor.

Several factors drive Raleigh’s ranking, including more than 54,000 open jobs with a median average wage topping $55,000.

And competition for talent is hot. Raleigh’s unemployment rate is under 3 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Wall Street Journal, meanwhile, ranked Raleigh as No. 6 for jobs.

Glassdoor, which allows employees to rate their companies, notes that several metro areas have more job openings than Raleigh. However, other rankings considered in the study lifted the City of Oaks to thetop spot:

  • Raleigh is No. 1 for hiring opportunity, which is based on the ratio of job openings to population
  • The city’s employers received a collective job satisfaction ranking of 3.5 on a 5-point scale, good for seventh place
  • And Raleigh ranked 19th for cost of living, which includes median salary as it compares to median home value.

Hottest job categories include:

  • Software engineers
  • Customer service representatives
  • Marketing managers
