RALEIGH – Forget the traditional surgical-style masks. Here comes CopperSAFE neckwear/facemasks, a new line launched today during the COVID-19 pandemic by teenage brothers Dylan and Connor Clark.

Using a copper-infused specialty fabric, the Raleigh-based duo designed the protective wear to be “lightweight, breathable and reusable.”

The price tag isn’t bad, either: under $15.

“We are receiving a high volume of inquiries into our business,” said Connor, 16, who attends Cardinal Gibbons High School.

His brother, Dylan, 14, is a student at North Raleigh Christian Academy and already a veteran entrepreneur. He founded HashtagLax, a lacrosse apparel and lifestyle brand, in 2017 at age 11.

“With schools closed for several weeks, my brother and I saw an opportunity to better invest our time at home,” Dylan added. “When out in public, we recognize the lack of proper facial coverings available to most people. While basic surgical masks are common, they are uncomfortable, inconvenient and not reusable. Even homemade masks can be can be an imperfect solution in terms of comfort and often require constant adjustment.”

CopperSAFE masks are infused with copper, a naturally occurring antimicrobial, self sanitizing element, which one study suggests is better than common materials at preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

They are also completely washable, available in youth sizes and can be customized.

“These custom-branded masks are a great way for companies, schools and other organizations to provide smart, comfortable protection for their employees or students,” added Connor.

The masks are currently being manufactured at a cut and sew facility near Asheville, but the brothers said they are exploring partnerships in Garner and Greensboro.

Meanwhile, the startup is self funded.

“We’re not currently seeking any external investment. Reinvestment of our profits to expand the business will drive our organic growth,” said Connor.
