RALEIGH – All Things Open is hosting a special virtual conference with TED-style talks and workshops covering open source processes and technologies.

Open Source 101 At Home runs from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 12. The keynote speakers are Dr. Shallon Brown, CIO of Canada-headquartered web development and digital marketing agency North Studio, and Jono Bacon, founder of community strategy and development firm Jono Bacon Consulting. Brown’s talk will cover the hallmarks of a great open source engineer and Bacon will discuss open source community best-practices.

Throughout the day, several TED-style sessions will cover a range of topics under two content categories: Processes and Technologies. Talks under the “Processes” category include everything from turning an open source project into a company, to formatting open source documentation, to software licensing and compliance. “Processes” topics include how to use Linux securely in the cloud, new features of MySQL 8.0, how WebAssembly works, how to enable two-factor authentication in open source applications, and more.

Open Source 1010 At Home is among many events that All Things Open is holding throughout the year leading up to its namesake annual conference in Raleigh (held October 18-20 this year). The group also hosts regular meetups in the Triangle.

With COVID-19 social distancing recommendations in order, All Things Open decided to take its programming online, announcing Open Source 101 At Home in early April.

All Things Open Founder Todd Lewis says the goal of the program is two-fold: “To provide solid, foundational open source education on both process and technology-related topics” and “to create and enable world-class networking opportunities.”

“Since the audience for Open Source 101 is more entry-mid level these two areas are extremely important,” Lewis adds. “Both can really propel a career and help with upward mobility, or just getting a foot in the door. We want attendees to leave the event better prepared to contribute to and consume open source.”

All Things Open plans to continue offering more online programming in the future, even after social distancing measures from COVID-19 wind down. “We’re looking at multiple online formats for meetups and conferences, but one thing is clear, we will offer more virtual programming moving forward,” Lewis says. “We have already expanded our audience and we hope that will continue.”

Lewis says he expects more than 1,000 people from all over the world to tune in. Tickets, available on Eventbrite, are $19, but WRAL TechWire readers can get their cost reduced to $0 by entering the promo code “WRAL” at checkout.
