DURHAM — A local tech startup says it’s got the cure for baldness. Now it has a “breakthrough” MedTech award to go with it.

The Durham-based REVIAN Inc.,  formerly known as PhotonMD, has won Best New Dermatology Technology Solution” award in the fourth annual MedTech Breakthrough Awards program for its hair growth system.

The system, costing $995, consists of a wireless cap controlled by a “smart” mobile app that delivers 10-minute daily hair growth treatments. Using patented, dual wavelengths of LED light, the startup claims it stimulates hair growth via nitric oxide release and generation.

“Nitric oxide increases scalp blood flow, decreases follicular inflammation and blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) – all major factors known to be associated with hair loss,” per its release.

In January, REVIAN released preliminary results to a trial that showed participants gained “an average of 21.3 more hairs/cm2 over a 16-week period.”

Androgenetic alopecia, or pattern hair loss, affects approximately 50 million men and 30 million women suffering with hair loss in the United States.
