CHARLOTTE — General Assembly (GA), a global tech school based out of New York, is setting up a “remote campus” in Charlotte.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, GA contends thousands of jobs in North Carolina remained unfilled due to inadequate training opportunities.

That’s where they come in. The company said its move to Charlotte seeks to address this critical issue and “ensure that local workers are equipped to tackle the economic challenges of today’s tech-driven world.”

“The city has welcomed us with open arms and conversations about partnerships are non-stop,” said Tony Kershaw, community manager for GA North Carolina. “To start, we’ve partnered with The Launch Place to offer members exclusive discounts on our classes and workshops. In these tough times, offering the community as many opportunities to learn creates new opportunities to thrive. GA can now call Charlotte home and we’re excited to be here.”

High-tech talent remains in demand across North Carolina. In June, there were more than 23,000 open jobs, according to the NC Technology Association. Despite year-over-year declines triggered by the crisis, June open technology positions increased over last month by over 2,000 new jobs, which is “certainly a positive sign,” the group said.

GA provides local workers and organizations with the tech and digital skills they need to succeed in today’s evolving market.

Among its course: coding, data science, digital marketing, product management, and user experience (UX) design.

“It’s clear that major changes are in store for the global workforce, including what career paths will hold the most promise post-economic recovery,” a company spokesperson said. “Jobs requiring tech and digital skills have proven to be the most resilient in the wake of mass layoffs, furloughs, and business closures.”

General Assembly started as a co-working space in Manhattan in 2011. It has since evolved into a global education and career development company, with more than 70,000 graduates worldwide.

The opening of its Charlotte remote campus follows successful expansions in Raleigh, Phoenix, Orlando, Detroit, Miami, Dallas, San Diego, and Houston in 2019. The company now has more than 30 locations worldwide, making it a leading source for training, staffing, and career transitions for companies and employees globally.
