RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Amazon is building more distribution centers, including in the Triangle at Cary and at Garner. There’s even talk of Amazon centers in vacated shopping mall properties. And Triangle-based ecommerce services provider ChannelAdvisor’s CEO says the time is now for his company to grow. Yes, the pandemic is transforming shopping thanks to stay-at-home and social distancing mandates.

And a new survey shows just how transformative an event COVID-19 continues to be.

“Long before COVID-19 was even a blip on the radar, countless obituaries had been written for traditional shopping, mega malls, brick and mortar retailers, and mom and pop shops,” says TOP Data in a new survey.

“According to a new survey of US shoppers, the ongoing global pandemic is on track to all but eliminate retail and commerce as we once knew it.”

The survey found that 73.5% of people are shopping online more than ever. Not really a surprise.

But note this: Once a post-pandemic world emerges, a “new normal” as has been predicted will include 88% of those now shopping online continuing to do so.

And people are using more data than ever online as they shop, stream, play games and more, says Comscore.

“June 2020 in-home data consumption up 14 percent compared to June 2019,” the company says.
