RALEIGH – Bold Music Lessons, created in Charlotte in 2013, has expanded to the Triangle and hired locally-based teachers.

Although it originally provided in-person and online lessons, since the pandemic it has been operating primarily online, said George Ramsay cofounder with Dean Williams. “We switched to all virtual lessons in March.”

It has 40 teachers and 350 students, four in the Triangle, and 350 students.

“Our teachers are highly vetted music professionals active in the local music scene,” Ramsay said in an interview with WRAL TechWire.

In addition to private music lessons taught by accomplished area musicians, it has offered preschool music enrichment programs, performance opportunities, and summer camps.

Its lessons are tailored to each individual’s skill level and aspirations, Ramsay said. Most commonly taught instruments are piano and guitar, but also voice and ukelele, the latter because instruments are not extremely expensive and nor hard to play.

Lessons are sold via monthly subscription, cost depending on lesson length (30, 45 or 50 minutes) for $30 to $50. The company reduced prices for vitural lessons (vs. in-person).

The company has not taken outside financing, though Ramsay said at some future time it might consider venture capital to expand.

“Our major goal,” Ramsay said, “is to become the premier Southeast music, education provider. But Raleigh is our first expansion. We have a proven business model. Our growth is right at 40 percent this year despite the pandemic.”
