MORRISVILLE – Lenovo continues to ramp up its year-old internet-of-things service offerings, this time adding a huge name to its portfolio.

Amazon Web Services.

Lenovo, the world’s top PC seller and a big provider of data center hardware, also is expanding on-the-spot installations and support for IoT solutions through a new partner program. The tech conglomerate says with 100 partners it now can offer 20,000 technicians to deploy IoT to smart buildings, retail outlets and much more. The offering now is available in more than 100 countries.

The global leader in all things cloud services, AWS will work with Lenovo through a “Collaboration Agreement,” Lenovo announced Tuesday.

Its ThinkIoT Solution Management platform, just launched, was developed with AWS, Lenovo notes. The platform “enables Lenovo to monitor the health of IoT solutions for customers so that Lenovo can repair them if they break, giving customers a practical approach to leveraging IoT technology.”

Lenovo also will be working with AWS on joint sales and marketing efforts.

AWS is fully onboard for the effort.

“Verticals such as manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation are in the midst of key business transformations,” said Dirk Didascalou, Vice President of IoT for Amazon Web Services. “We are delighted to collaborate with Lenovo to accelerate customers in these verticals by providing the validated AWS IoT solutions and cloud infrastructure to make it possible.”

Why such a big IoT play?

John Gordon, President of the Triangle-based Commercial IoT Group, pointed out: “IoT holds the potential to transform our customers’ businesses, and we are committed to making it as easy as possible for them with the help of our growing ecosystem.”

And there’s money to be made. Lots of it.

“By 2025, 50%+ of orgs will use a distributed cloud option at the location of their choice,” reports research firm Gartner. “Today, IT must deliver location-independent services.”

The global IoT market was already worth more than $80 billion this year, according to a report.
