CARY – Epic Games is taking another step forward in creating digital human images that appear like the real us. On Wednesday Epic unveiled “MetaHumans” through its Unreal video game development engine

In a “sneek peak,” Epic says users can create “high-fidelity digital humans.”

The tool is called MetaHuman Creator, and Epic says it can “empower anyone to create a bespoke photorealistic digital human, fully rigged and complete with hair and clothing, in a matter of minutes.”

The new development comes after Epic acquired real-time facial animation technology startup Hyprsense last November. Hyprsense says its technology will give “Unreal Engine creators the ability to deploy and drive the most advanced character assets, on any platform.”

Watch the video:

“MetaHuman Creator is a cloud-streamed app that takes real-time digital human creation from weeks or even months to less than an hour—at an unprecedented standard of quality, fidelity, and realism,” the Unreal development team says. “When your character is finished, you can export and download it, rigged and ready to animate in Unreal Engine.”

Achieving “photo realism” was a stated goal of Epic when it unveiled a new version of the Unreal engine last year.

Epic, best known now as the developer of the game Fortnite, has invested heavily in bringing more realism to its Unreal engine, which is one of the most widely used in the video game industry.

Looks like all that research is paying off.
