RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – The jobs market in the Triangle remains as hot as summer with July underway even though a new report includes a bit of cooling.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce released its latest unemployment figures last week. Among its findings: The Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area’s unemployment rate (not seasonally adjusted) rose slightly in May to 3.9%, up from 3.7% in April. Still, that’s a dramatic shift from May 2020, when the unemployment rate hovered 12%.

The Durham-Chapel Hill area, in particular, had the lowest unemployment rate among all metro areas across the state, at 3.7%, and Orange County’s unemployment rate ranked the lowest of all counties, at 3.3%.

Despite the fluctuations in unemployment rates, which are subject to seasonal patterns, the number of open jobs in the Triangle continues to hold steady.

Dr. Michael Walden, economist at North Carolina State University, says the struggle to hire for certain positions may push employers to consider automation.

“The post-pandemic economy is going to be much different than pre-pandemic economy, mainly in the fact that businesses are going to use more technology, more automation, which has been increasing in terms of what it can do,” he said.

WRAL TechWire is tracking the Triangle’s job trends as the region continues its economic recovery. Our weekly Jobs Report compiles the latest information from the region’s top job boards, offering a breakdown of how many jobs are posted, which companies are hiring and for what positions. We’ve also included upcoming job fairs, student-centric resources and a list of Twitter accounts that track local job openings.
