WILSON – There is a shelf in my home that showcases a disappointing collection of sad, decrepit plants.

I try to have a green thumb, really, I do. I watch videos on watering techniques, I read blogs about sunlight and soil types, and I even subscribe to Better Homes and Gardens. But, at the end of the day, I come home to drooping aloes and withered succulents.

As a child, I watched my grandmothers tend to their indoor and outdoor plants. They potted and repotted, pruned, and watered a variety of flowers, and their labors were rewarded with vibrant blossoms.

The difference between me and my grandmothers is that they took time and effort to give their plants the proper environments to not just survive, but thrive. I, on the other hand, have yet to move past my article reading and on to care and execution. I place my pots based on what is most aesthetically pleasing, rather than what area is best lit. I forget to water my plants for weeks, and when I finally remember I over water them. How can I expect my plants to grow when the environment I give them is set up for failure?

Plants are a lot like people. If we want to lead healthy, successful lives we have to give ourselves the proper environment. As we move into a post-pandemic period, now is the perfect opportunity to reevaluate what kind of environment we are rooted in.

One of the most important factors to consider is where you call home. As people redefine what their hometown looks like, many have looked rural. Wilson, NC is not the average rural hometown. From the art culture inspired by Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park to Greenlight Community Broadband’s gigabit internet to Gig East’s entrepreneurship ecosystem, residents of Wilson can find everything they need to not simply live, but live well.

Thanks to decades of forward-thinking city leadership, Wilson’s infrastructure delivers high-quality services that are normally found only in large metropolitan areas. Greenlight’s fiber-to-home broadband runs throughout the city and into portions of Wilson County, delivering the fastest internet speeds in the state. These speeds are put to use by remote workers, business owners, entrepreneurs, and students.

The Gig East Exchange in Historic Downtown Wilson provides resources for innovative thinkers aiming to put their ideas on the market and space for all kinds of workers to settle in and accomplish their goals. Through programming, events, partners, and good neighborly friendliness, support is easily found. In Wilson, when one business succeeds, we all succeed.
