RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Threats of variant “D” amid a renewed COVID-19 assault have – so far anyway – not driven down demand for talent across the Triangle region with job sites continuing to list 50,000 or more openings.

But there has been an uptick in unemployment rates in the state’s metro areas. Is that reason for concern?

“These numbers still look good to me,” said N.C. State economist Dr. Mike Walden. “Since the numbers are not seasonally adjusted, comparing today to the same month in 2020 is essential. The report states that the non-seasonally-adjusted jobless rate was lower in June 2021 compared to June 2020 in all 100 counties. This is a big positive.”

The North Carolina Department of Commerce reported last week that each of the state’s 15 metro areas saw rising unemployment rates in June. That includes Durham-Chapel Hill, which had the lowest rate out of all metro areas (at 4.1%), and Orange County, with the lowest of all counties (at 3.7%). Raleigh came in at 4.2%.

Both the Durham and Raleigh metro area rates were up 0.4% from May.

Looking for work? 30+ Triangle companies are posting jobs via this Twitter feed

These figures are subject to seasonal changes. On a positive note, however, North Carolina has added 376,701 workers statewide since June 2020—speaking to the state’s ongoing economic recovery efforts.

WRAL TechWire is tracking the Triangle’s job trends as the region continues its economic recovery. Our weekly Jobs Report compiles the latest information from the region’s top job boards, offering a breakdown of how many jobs are posted, which companies are hiring and for what positions. We’ve also included upcoming job fairs, student-centric resources and a list of Twitter accounts that track local job openings.
