CARY – Have you ever felt envious of the high wages your friends seem to be earning for their technology jobs? A new survey conducted by Global Knowledge shows just how well some engineers, architects and programmers are paid, and the certifications that could yield higher wages, should you wish to acquire a new skill.
And remember this: Apple as well as Google, Fidelity and other companies are recruiting for top-paying tech jobs as they build and expand in the Triangle.
Apple, for example, will be paying some workers at its future campus more than $187,000 a year.
And opportunities beckon.
Thousands of high-tech jobs remain unfilled in the Triangle, despite the wage potential in a talent market where demand for technical talent is intense. For those early in their careers or ready for a skills update, here are some of the certifications worth a look, according to the survey from Global Knowledge.
“IT certification is one of the best ways to validate your knowledge, skills and abilities in a subject,” the report from IT training firm Global Knowledge reads. But the company warns that the certification itself doesn’t guarantee a high salary.

The data in their report is a “snapshot of the average certification-holder for each credential. And the top credentials pertain to data security and expertise in a cloud environment, reflecting growing concerns about hackers while cloud computing continues to grow.
According to the results, a Google-certified professional data engineer earns $171,749, and a Google-certified professional cloud architect earns $169,029, topping the list in the first and second spots.
Google, by the way, is hiring right now to fill jobs at its expanding engineering hub in Durham.
“Data engineers analyze information to gain insight into business outcomes, build statistical models to support decision-making and create machine learning models to automate and simplify key business processes,” the study reads. “The certification enables data-driven decision making by collecting, transforming and visualizing data.”
An Amazon Web Services (AWS) certified solutions architect earns $159,033. Prior to pursuing this certification, AWS recommends at least one year of prior experience designing systems and completion of the AWS-certified cloud practitioner certification.
According to the study, CRISC, or certified in risk and information systems control, or a CISSP, or certified information systems security professional, could yield a salary of about $152,000, whereas a CISM, certified information security manager could anticipate a salary of around $149,000.
A project management professional (PMP) certification, through the Project Management Institute (PMI), is known as one of the highest regarded project management certifications and yields an average salary of nearly $149,000, the study found.
