CARY – Epic Games has bought the creator of popular gaming franchises Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Dance Central, Harmonix, in a deal announced by Epic Games in a statement today.

According to the company, the acquisition of Harmonix will play a major role in creating the musical journeys and gameplay for Fortnite.

“As we work to build the metaverse, this expertise is needed to reimagine how music is experienced, created and distributed,” the statement reads.

Harmonix will continue to support its existing titles, Epic’s statement notes.  Harmonix noted in a blog post that the company won’t change the way they plan to support its older titles.

In that same blog post, Harmonix called the deal “monumental” and highlighted its 26 years of independent operation.

“We have aspired to redefine what a music game can be,” the blog post reads.  “Now, we’ll be working with Epic to once again challenge expectations as we bring our unique brand of musical gaming experiences to the Metaverse, and we couldn’t be more excited.”
