RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Another outage has hit the massive Amazon Web Services network – the third in two weeks – and the tech giant says it is working to resolve the issues. Overnight, the problems were addressed.

According to its website early Thursday, all indicators were “green.”

But Wednesday was a different matter.

“We continue to make progress in restoring connectivity to the remaining EC2 instances and EBS volumes,” AWS reported at just after 12:30 PM, referring to its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (N. Virginia).”

Some problems persisted into the evening.

Trouble in the cloud: What’s going on with Amazon Web Services?

“Over the last hour, after addressing many of the underlying hardware failures, we have seen an accelerated rate of recovery for the affected EC2 instances and EBS volumes,” AWS said at its status website. “We continue to work on addressing the underlying hardware failures …”

DownDetector reported numerous outages across a wide variety of services, including Cary-based Epic Games.

“DownDetector is showing the issues mostly affecting the Epic Games Store including Fortnite and Rocket League, along with Amazon’s own New World,” PCGamer reported.

Earlier, Amazon cited a power failure in the incident:

“We can confirm a loss of power within a single data center within a single Availability Zone (USE1-AZ4) in the US-EAST-1 Region. This is affecting availability and connectivity to EC2 instances that are part of the affected data center within the affected Availability Zone.”

By early afternoon, AWS reported progress.

“In the last hour, we have restored underlying connectivity to the majority of the remaining EC2 instance and EBS volumes, but are now working through full recovery at the host level.

“The majority of affected AWS services remain in recovery and we have seen recovery for the majority of single-AZ RDS databases that were affected by the event. … We continue to work towards full recovery.

AWS also acknowledged a second problem:

“We are investigating increased error rates for some customers using Directory Services AD Connector or Managed AD with Amazon SSO in US-EAST-1 Region. Customers using other Active Directory functionality are not impacted at this time.”
