RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – Verizon is introducing a 5G hotspot designed to deliver data faster to mobile devices. Unfortunately, Verizon’s next-generation wireless broadband network remains available only in a few locations.

“The Inseego MiFi is our first business-ready 5G device, combining bandwidth and speed customers expect from 5G, with enterprise-grade security businesses require,” said Tami Erwin, executive vice president and group CEO for Verizon Business, in the announcement.

The company declined comment when asked about timing for 5G launches in the Triangle and Charlotte. Verizon is promising 5G service in 30 markets by the end of this year.

Verizon also offers some 5G smartphones, including one from Lenovo-owned Motorola.

AT&T is already trialing 5G in the Triangle and also offers a hotspot.

5G offers the promise of faster streaming for Internet of Things, augmented reality, and high-definition 4K as well as 8K.

The new Verizon device, Inseego 5G MiFi M1000 Hotspot, retails for $650 but is available for $500 under a two-year plan. Monthly payments are just over $27. It promises “next-level convenience.”

“The 5G MiFi M1000 Hotspot lets you share Internet on the go with other smartphones and Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Experience ultra-fast upload and download speeds on a user-friendly hotspot,” Verizon says.

“Advanced administration tools and user settings put security in your own hands. And a long-lasting 4400 mAh Li-Ion battery keeps your device going for hours on end.”

Verizon also announced 5G availability in St. Paul, Minnesota. Service also is offered in Denver, Chicago, Minneapolis and Providence, RI.
