RALEIGH – Raleigh Convention Center (RCC) is getting a major tech upgrade, and it’s largely down to this fast-growing market segment: Esports.
Plans include upgrading its entire wireless network system and connectivity speed, and increasing its internet speed pipe from 1 to 5 Gbps.
“Esports events are developing into a vibrant mainstay at the RCC,” the center said in its release.
“Staying in the game, however, requires not just meeting but exceeding expectations around wireless connectivity.”

In the last few years, the gaming scene has exploded in the Triangle, and the 500,00 square-foot RCC has played host to a number of events: East Coast Game Conference, Unreal Academy and Playthrough, plus a series of Major League gaming competitions.
The RCC said its new system will improve its ability to handle dense crowds of wireless users with high bandwidth requirements.
“The Research Triangle is a nationally recognized ‘brain hub,’ which means we have thousands of visitors streaming in fully expecting to quickly connect with the internet for all sorts of reasons, some of them quite demanding,” Kerry Painter, RCC’s general manager and director said in a statement.
“Our job is to make their experience seamless and exquisite, which is what this upgrade is all about. If a customer can’t connect with the internet in the way he or she wants and needs, we’ve missed an opportunity to cement the kind of broader connection that convention centers thrive on.”
The first to benefit will be the ESL R6 US Major Tournament from August 12-18.
