CHARLOTTE – Duke Energy received approval for its Green Source Advantage program which will enable the company to expand renewable energy options in North Carolina, the company said Wednesday. The program allows customers to negotiate prices directly with renewable energy suppliers, a service not previously offered by Duke Energy.
Capacity is being set aside for the UNC System and the military, according to Randy Wheeless, a communications representative for Duke Energy. This capacity will be removed in three years.

Duke Energy has been steadily increasing its renewable energy offerings since the passage of North Carolina’s Competitive Energy Solutions law in 2017. Duke has been offering rebates for solar energy customers and will continue to do so over the next three years in addition to the new Green Source Advantage program, the company said.
Applications to join the program will open October 1 and will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis, the company said. The program will not be subsidized by other Duke Energy customers and participating customers bear the full cost of the program
“Large customers focused on securing more renewable energy now have an additional option with Duke Energy’s Green Source Advantage,” said Stephen De May, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president. “This is a flexible program that will help them meet their renewable energy or sustainability goals on their own terms.”
Shares of Duke Energy were trading at $91.02 Wednesday afternoon, down 13 cents.
