CARY – Steve Malik is not completely separating himself from medical tech platform Medfusion, which he has sold for $43 million to a California firm in a deal announced early Wednesday.
Instead, Malik has spun off a new company he’s calling Greenlight Health Data Solutions.
It’s built around the Medfusion Data Services group.
The firm will be staffed by current Medfusion personnel and will focus on health data records.

“Creating a health data services company with dedicated technical and operational resources will enable us to accelerate the growth of patient data-driven applications,” said Malik in a statement. “The need for companies and organizations to consume healthcare data is only going to increase and Greenlight Health intends to be on the forefront of satisfying that demand.”
Malik will fund the new company, which will be based in Cary as is Medfusion.

Greenlight Health’s goal is to provide “ready access to patient-approved data housed across a wide variety of healthcare providers and patient portals,” the new company said.
Greenlight intends to correct what its leaders see as problems with patient data and security.
“The majority of health data transacted today is de-identified and often shared without patient consent, testing the bounds of privacy and security,” the company said.
“Greenlight Health’s data services platform eliminates risk and ensures patient consent, transforming the business of health data retrieval and truly empowering patients and consumers to maintain control of their most critical and personal information.”
The company starts with a base of information already provided across more than 40 electronic health records portals and more than 700,000 providers of information.
