CARRBORO – Looks like Carrboro residents will have to wait a little longer for Google Fiber.

Two weeks after contractors for the tech giant began installing the high-speed internet service, the Town of Carrboro has hit pause on the work after encountering “numerous complications.”

“Google Fiber has voluntarily paused construction in Carrboro until Janury 1, 2020,” Rachel Heggen, Carborro’s communication specialist, confirmed in a text message to WRAL TechWire today.

She added: “The Town of Carrboro and Google Fiber feel it is in the best interest of the public to temporarily halt the ongoing project and re-evaluated construction plans.”

The announcement comes a day after the town confirmed that a contractor with Google Fiber hit a gas line on Old Fayetteville Road.

The town briefly shut down the road by West Poplar and Jones Ferry. Residents at Autumn Woods Apartments were also evacuated from Building C while crews worked to rectify the issue.

The town didn’t elaborate on what other complications occurred “over the past few weeks,” but stressed that “public safety is the highest priority of the Town.”

“Our goal is to work with Google Fiber, OWASA and Dominion Gas to improve coordination and communication on this project that will ultimately be of great benefit for our community,” she said.

Google Fiber availability is still limited to a few neighborhoods around the Triangle and in Charlotte.
