The N.C. Department of Transportation hosted the first demonstration in North America of an autonomous aerial vehicle, also known as an air taxi, which can be used for passenger transport and logistics.

The vehicle has been successfully operated in Asia and Europe.

Gov. Roy Cooper attended attend the EHang demonstration Tuesday afternoon at the State Highway Patrol Driving Facility/Aviation Hanger on East Tryon Road in Raleigh. EHang is a company based in Guangzhou, China, that develops and manufactures autonomous aerial vehicles.

A brief speaking program preceded the flight demonstration. Passengers were not be on the demonstration flight, per restrictions from the Federal Aviation Administration. For safety and security reasons, this demonstration was not open to the public.
