Amazon-owned Whole Foods is getting ready to lay off 102 employees after announcing plans to close its gluten-free baking facility at 2800 Perimeter Park Drivein Morrisville.

The entity known as Whole Foods Market Southern Region — Bake House — disclosed the layoffs in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Report with the NC Department of Commerce on Jan.9.

The layoffs will begin on March 8.

“This is to inform you that, effective March 8, 2020, Whole Foods Market’s South Region will be permanently closing its Bakehouse, which is located at 2800 Perimeter Park Drive,” the notice reads, signed by Kenisha Adams, a Georgia-based executive leader for Whole Foods Market-South Region.

The news was first reported by the Triangle Business Journal.

In a prepared statement to the publication, Whole said: “Whole Foods Market was the first grocer to respond to the growing customer demand for gluten-free products when we opened our North Carolina Bakehouse nearly 20 years ago. As the number of certified gluten-free suppliers has rapidly expanded over the years, our reliance on the bakehouse has diminished. We are working closely with all impacted Team Members and hope to place them in our nearby locations or in other roles within the company.”

Amazon agreed to buy Whole Foods in 2017 for $13.4 billion. Today, it’s expanded its grocery delivery services to include Whole Foods products.
