RALEIGH – Shaw University and Saint Augustine’s University are partnering with Apple to become technology hubs for coding and app development education.
The program is part of Apple’s Community Education Initiative through Tennessee State University and other historically black colleges and universities.
“These schools will each become technology hubs with coding education opportunities for their campus and community, built on Apple’s Everyone Can Code and Everyone Can Create curricula,” a spokesperson for Apple explains. The schools also will become “community coding centers.”
The universities will receive a variety of equipment, training and other tools from Apple.
“Shaw applied to be included in the Apple/TSU program because it aligned well with our focus on strengthening our technology program,” a spokesperson for the university tells WRAL TechWire. “Equipment, training and technical support are provided.”
“Shaw will receive Apple devices for student use and community engagement programs,” the spokesperson added. “We hope to introduce an introductory coding course in the next school year.”
In statements, leaders at both schools said the Apple initiative will bost efforts to prepare students for technology careers.
“Located in the tech hub of Raleigh, NC, Shaw University attracts a talented student body and seeks career placement with our partners,” stated Dr. Paulette Dillard, President of Shaw University. “We’re grateful that this partnership with Apple will help prepare our students–along with a broader outreach to those in our community – for promising careers in technology.”
Dr. Maria Lumpkin, SAU’s interim president, added: “We are extremely excited about our new partnership with Apple. As a liberal arts institution, Saint Augustine’s University prepares students for leadership in a complex, diverse, and rapidly changing world. We believe all students should be equipped with the technology skills required to meet industry workforce demands. Industry anticipates a significant gap in this area. Saint Augustine’s University is committed to producing graduates prepared to meet this demand.”
Faculty at both schools will participate in the Community Education Learning Series fro Apple and hen “explore innovative ways to engage with learners,” they noted.
