CHARLOTTE – Residents in the Charlotte television market now have access to NEXTGEN TV, which provides capabilities for advanced emergency alertis, 4K quality and more.
The more expansive audio and visual options enable more personalized broadcasts, with information and interactive features, that could result in a delivering more relevant and engaging content for television viewers, according to a statement issued by Pearl TV, a business organization of more than 750 U.S. broadcast companies.
WRAL TechWire parent company Capitol Broadcasting Company launched NEXTGEN TV on WRAL-TV and WRAZ (FOX 50) in December 2020, and also participated in an emergency broadcasting testing along with UNC-TV in 2018 in a preliminary pilot that tested the technology. Capitol Broadcasting Company demonstrated the technology in February 2018 at a local networking event.

The five Charlotte-area stations launching the new third-generation digital TV broadcast technology this week are Cox Media Group’s WAXN-TV, Cox Media Group’s WSOC-TV (ABC), Nexstar Media Group, Inc.’s WJZY-TV (FOX), Gray Television’s WBTV-TV (CBS), and TEGNA’s WCNC-TV (NBC).
“NEXTGEN TV adds a whole new dimension to TV viewing with Voice + audio from Dolby, available only on NEXTGEN TV,” said Paul Curran, EVP, Television at Cox Media Group, in a statement. “Viewers will feel the power of movie theater-quality sound, allowing them to hear every voice clearly and offering uniform volume across different channels.”
Charlotte now joins nearly 40 early-adopter regions across the country – including Raleigh-Durham – where NEXTGEN TV service is available.
“NEXTGEN TV doesn’t compete for household bandwidth with over-the-top content, it offers free over-the-air television to elevate a viewer’s experience,” the statement reads. Currently, NEXTGEN TV is a feature built into a few newer television models, including ones from LG Electronics, Samsung, and Sony.
