A national reiumbursement program for some telecommunications carries provides up to $1.9 billion for the removal of equipment purchased from China-based vendors Huawei and ZTE.

The Federal Communications Commission – in a unanimous decisionmade Tuesday – says the move is being made because of a potential spying threat, CNN reported.

“The program is meant to subsidize the cost for small telecommunications companies in the U.S. to replace gear from firms like Huawei and ZTE in an effort to secure U.S. networks,” CNBC reported.

Companies with up to 10 million customers are eligible for the reimbursement.
